Bekins Breaks Ground On Coopersville Expansion

Growing Business: Breaking Ground on Warehouse Expansion

OUR GROWING BUSINESS NEEDS MORE SPACE

If you drive by Coopersville along the I-96 expressway, you will see construction vehicles at the Bekins Service Center and Warehouse on O’Malley Drive. Bekins has broken ground on a new addition which will nearly double the warehouse and office space, creating space for more jobs at our growing business.

Our locally-owned, internationally-acclaimed appliance and electronics company in West Michigan has already outgrown the three-year-old building in Coopersville.

Bekins President, Scott Bekins, opened the Coopersville Service Center and Warehouse in 2015 to accommodate the company’s growth at the time. With state-of-the-art, interactive showrooms in Grand Haven and Grand Rapids, he planned for the warehouse and office space in Coopersville to accommodate at least 10 more years of company growth. However, Bekins has grown faster than even he expected.

Bekins, which also owns Classic Stereo in Grand Rapids, has nearly tripled its staff since 2010. When the additional 30,000 square feet of warehouse and office space is complete, it will give us the space to double our staff.

IMPROVING EFFICIENCY – CONTINUING TO RECYCLE

The addition includes changes to make operation even more efficient, which enables us to deliver the best service while keeping costs competitive.

Added space will also help Bekins continue to be one of the greenest appliance dealers in the nation. We recycle more than 90 percent of all waste in their facility, which includes:

  • old appliances
  • cardboard
  • plastic
  • styrofoam
  • banding
  • and much more…

Our recycling efforts saved more than 1,286 trees, 7,567 gallons of oil and 280 cubic yards of landfill space in just the last three years.

SERVING MORE CUSTOMERS

The addition will help us serve more of the top-notch products and services that have earned us 20 national and international honors during our 43 years of serving West Michigan.

“We always have been and always will be a service company that happens to sell products,” Bekins said. “People can buy what we sell elsewhere, but you can’t get our service anywhere else. That’s why we continue to grow – better service, same price. We can only do that by being smarter and more efficient. The operations center in Coopersville and our amazing people allow us to do just that.”

Bekins-Frequently-Asked-Questions

The Forgotten Question: Who Will Repair Your Appliance?

Bekins Appliance Repair

Imagine having your refrigerator quit working during the hottest days of the year. With your food melting away, you make an appliance repair call to the company that sold it to you. Seven weeks later, they still give you the run around.

It happened to a local woman last summer. She ditched the other company, called Bekins and we resolved the issue for her quickly. She thanked us on Facebook and told us the whole story.

When you buy any products, we recommend you ask “Who is going to fix it when it needs repair?”

You might be surprised by the answer.

APPLIANCE REPAIR standards

Many customers think that appliance repair works like the auto industry. They think the company who sold them the appliance has to fix it when it breaks and they will send a licensed professional to perform the repair. That is not always the case.

You do not need a license to install or repair appliances. Even worse, many brands do not hold the seller accountable for fixing appliances when they break.

Each company sets its own standards.

Some contract it out to a third-party company. Other companies give you a 1-800 number for the manufacturer in some other state. Neither option meets our standards at Bekins.

STAINLESS STEEL CLEANER: PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT

Wolf Kitchen

You may not think too hard about how you will clean your stainless steel appliance until after it’s installed. However, you obviously want to keep it clean and shiny. We recommend using a stainless steel cleaner that you can find in our showroom. If you use the wrong household cleaner, it can actually do more harm than good.

USE STAINLESS STEEL CLEANER

We have a handful of stainless steel cleaners that we use on the appliances in our store every day. You can find Classic, Affresh and Flitz stainless steel cleaner at any of our locations.

Using the wrong household cleaner can possibly harm your stainless steel finish, especially if you own a fingerprint resistant appliance. The wrong household cleaner could wipe off that resistant coating.

IT’S NOT COMPLICATED

An online search about “how to clean stainless steel appliances” pulls up articles that claim stainless steel cleaners do not work and make cleaning your appliances sound very complicated.

Our appliance professionals clean dozens of stainless steel appliances every day. They use a microfiber cloth and the stainless steel cleaner we provide for our customers. They apply the cleaner to the cloth, try to wipe with the grain and the results look great.

If you don’t believe us, stop by one of our showrooms to see the clean.

OVEN REPAIR: LET THEM EAT CAKE

Oven Repair Feature Image

Did you bake and eat a cake at your job today? Our repair technicians Lou and Chad did. They certainly had fun with it too. It was a welcome break from their routine of moving and fixing appliances and it does actually help with oven repair.

Why did they bake a cake? It was a part of a yellow cake test we can do for our customers. You can give us a call but it would be less expensive to do it yourself. We recommend you try the cake test if you think your new oven does not cook properly.

It’s easy too.

HOW IT’S DONE

  1. Buy a box of cake mix at your local grocery store.
  2. Preheat your oven for 30 minutes to let the entire cavity get to the correct temperature.
  3. Bake the cake in your new oven, following the instructions on the box, especially the time and temperature.
  4. Taste the cake. If it tastes good, and cooked exactly how the box said it would, then your new oven is working just fine.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH OVEN REPAIR?

Good question! It stems from a common problem. You get a new oven or range. Then you bake your favorite recipe, only to have it overcook!

That’s certainly no fun and we understand the frustration. Want to know why it happens?

The temperature your oven produces changes over time. Your oven loses roughly one degree of heat per year. Let’s say you have been using your oven for 20 years. If you set it to 350 degrees, it may only reach 330 degrees, maybe even less.

Which means it takes longer to cook your food.

Why haven’t you noticed? You have probably been slowly adjusting your cooking over the years to accommodate the changes.

WHY YELLOW BOX CAKE?

A box of yellow cake mix has very few variables in the recipe. The only variable is the egg, which is why the box will usually tell you to cook it within a window of time. One box says 23 to 28 minutes.

On the other hand, there are a lot of variables when cooking other foods like meat.

  • What type of meat is it?
  • How thick is the meat?
  • Did you let the meat thaw properly?

So yellow cake provides a very standard test for your oven.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR ME?

Oven Repair
  • If you bought a new oven recently, then understand that your favorite recipe may cook faster now.

  • If you have an older oven, the box cake test can help you understand how it cooks. Follow the directions, then see how much longer it takes to bake the cake correctly. You can see just how much performance you are losing from your older oven, then adjust accordingly.
