Better Laundry: Front Load vs. Top Load Washing Machine

Front Load Washing Machine eightWest

There are times when consulting with industry experts beats any research you can do yourself online. When it comes to a washing machine, everyone has their preference. At Bekins, we do too!

While we offer a variety of styles, we believe front load washing machines clean your clothes the best.

WHY A FRONT LOAD WASHING MACHINE?

To meet government guidelines for high efficiency, washing machines use less water. Many high efficiency top load washing machines without an agitator will barely move your clothes. Don’t believe us? We took the top off one and recorded it on video. How much detergent residue do you think will be left in this load?

A front load washing machine can use less water and still get your clothes clean. It works on a front load because your clothes will tumble through the small amount of water.

what’s the hesitation?

Some people hesitate to use a front load washing machine because they have heard about some of the old, original versions which had problems with mold. Manufacturers like Whirlpool have largely solved that problem. If you care for your washer properly, you won’t have that issue.

Two simple ways to avoid mold in a front load washer:

  1. Crack the door open when you are not using it.
  2. Use one good brand of high efficiency detergent and don’t use too much of it.

ENERGY STAR SAVES WATER – THIS SAVES YOU TIME & MONEY

Washers & Dryers at Bekins Energy Star

At Bekins, we take many efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. We offer new Whirlpool washers that will save water and rate well with the Energy Star standards. Their new features help the environment but may leave some customers confused.

ENERGY STAR GUIDELINES changing expectations

If you start seeing detergent residue on your clothes with a newer washing machine, especially one that rates well with Energy Star, we offer simple solutions to try before calling our service department.

As a way to use less water with each wash, new Whirlpool washers have changed their “Normal Wash” settings. For years the rinse cycle in a “Normal Wash” setting offered a deep wash. The tub would fill with water, agitate the clothes, then drain the water.

Washer Options Energy Star

Newer washers now spray the clothes with water in the rinse cycle, then drain the much less remaining water.

The solutions?

  • You can use less detergent, because your normal wash cycle is using less water. This option can save you both time and money.
  • You can also activate various “options” to tell the washer that you want the tub to still fill with water, agitate and drain for your rinse cycle.
  • Which options? That depends on the model so you need to consult your Use and Care Guide.

NEED ADDITIONAL HELP?

That’s why we have a service department. We want you to be thrilled with your purchase. That means helping you use it correctly and making sure your appliances work.

WANT TO SAVE MONEY AND DETERGENT? GET PUREWASH!

pureWash-Pro-Feature-Image

Want to save money, reduce your carbon footprint and really clean your clothes? As a breakthrough in home laundry, pureWash has the same desires.

If our employees use this product in their own homes, then you know it works. Read just a few pureWash Pro features and you will most likely want to install it in yours too.

  • The power of oxygen eliminates 99.9% of bacteria and mold.
  • That power keeps detergents and fabric softeners out of your water.
  • Buying fewer detergents and fabric softeners saves you money.
  • Save more money when you reduce your use of the water heater. The product only works with the cold water cycle.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND PUREWASH PRO

EASY TO SETUP

The pureWash Pro website estimates you can install their product in fewer than 20 minutes. The video above shows each step in the process. It starts when you mount the product to the wall, then connect it to the nearest power outlet.

Connect the product to the cold water source in your laundry room and the washing machine. Finally, let it know what kind of machine you have by turning the switch in the back to “top load” or “front load.”

Once installed, you will only need to replace the Dessicant Dryer Cartridge when it stops emitting a blue tint during use. How often you ask? The user manual says it depends on humidity and how often you use the machine.

PUREWASH AND BEKINS

We work hard to reduce our carbon footprint. In 2016, we recycled more than 90 percent of all waste at our Coopersville Service Center.

So it makes perfect sense to carry such an eco-friendly product for our selection of washers. Some of our employees have installed the product in their own homes, but it also works with washers not bought at Bekins.

Keeping the Washer Clean

How Your Washer Gets Dirty

Years ago, phosphates were removed from detergents due to environmental concerns, and as a result, the detergents had to be reformulated to work without them. Because of this, washing machines have also changed to use less water, while still cleaning the clothes.

With less water being used, it is important to not use too much detergent because it can cause mold and mildew inside the washers (both top load and front load). Top load washers have more air gaps and openings, so while the odor may dissipate, the mold and mildew may still be there. On a front load washer, most of the air is trapped when the door is closed and odor builds up.

what happens inside the washer:

Each washer has a specific water level which creates a water line inside the tub. Just above that line, water splashes, and dirt or soap residue can stick to the tub. Once it sticks, there is no way for it to get washed off since the basket only tumbles slowly when water is inside. Some will get rinsed off by the splashing of rinse water but often times it sticks and stays. Over time, this area continues to collect more residue, and mold and mildew will start.

Here are a few simple tips to help prevent the mold and mildew from occurring in the first place.
  • Always use high efficiency (HE) detergent and use as little as possible. (One or two tablespoons maximum is recommended by most manufacturers). Detergents also come concentrated: 2x, 3x, 4x, we’ve even seen up to 8x. In those cases a teaspoon or less is all that’s needed.
  • Use the ‘clean washer’ option with the appropriate cleaner on a regular basis. When you run a cleaning cycle, the basket will spin at high speed, with water in the tub, forcing water to clean the entire inside of the tub.

With proper care of your washer, mold and mildew will be nothing but a worry of the past!
